Does a dopamine detox work?

The stunt version, a day of blank staring to reset your brain, does not work. There is nothing to reset, and dopamine is not something you can flush. What does work is retraining the habit loop with small daily reps, which is a skill you build, not a cleanse you survive.
Why the one-day reset fails
The promise is that a day without stimulation resets your brain to a clean baseline. It feels productive. It changes almost nothing, because the thing it targets does not exist. There is no toxin to flush and no meter to zero.
Dopamine is a signaling molecule your brain uses constantly for motivation and movement. Abstaining for a day does not deplete it or recalibrate it. The pull you feel the next morning is the same learned loop you had before, untouched.
What does work
Compulsive use runs on a loop. A cue fires, a thought and a feeling follow, an urge rises, and the old behavior ends the discomfort. Repeated enough, that sequence runs faster than deliberate thought.
You change it by catching the loop earlier and interrupting it, again and again, until the interruption becomes the habit. That is repetition, the same slow process behind any skill. It is why lasting change takes weeks of small reps rather than one heroic day, and why a slip is a missed rep, not a failed cleanse.
Design beats willpower
Willpower is a poor tool for this, because cues inflate the urge faster than you can argue with it. Removing the cue works better than resisting it. Turn off the badge, leave the phone in another room, make the easy option less easy.
This is the difference between a detox and a reset built to last. One asks you to endure. The other changes the conditions so there is less to endure in the first place.
